Chapter Ten

During our drive to the palace, I planned my escape to see Landon. I decided to use the usual excuse of needing to go to the office. “Thank you, Raul. Please wait here. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” I instructed, exiting the limo.

“Surely you’re not leaving after the long day we’ve had?” Mother protested, stepping into the palace with me.

“Georgina and I still have work we need to take care of.” This wasn’t exactly a lie. I had work to do just not at the office. I planned to work remotely at the flat to be with Landon. I turned to Georgina and winked. She smiled, knowing I was trying to get away.

“Don’t worry, Your Majesty, I’ll make sure she doesn’t stay late.”

Adaline ran to Mother and hugged her. “Oh, my goodness, did you have a nice day, Adaline?” Mother hugged Addy around her head and shoulders.

“No, I was bored. Charlotte made me study all day.” Her shoulders sagged.

“Studying will make you smart, dear.”

“I know, but I want to do something. Can you take me to get gelato?”

“Not today, dear, I need to speak with your father. Maybe tomorrow.” Mother strode past Adaline to the office.

“Catherine, will you take me to get gelato, please?”

“I already have plans.” I wrapped my arm around her shoulder and hugged her.

“You never do anything with me anymore. Just this once, please.” She locked her fingers together and showed me her sad drooping eyes. I glanced at Georgina; she was giving me a pity face, too.

“Let me see if I can change my plans.” Pulling out my mobile phone, I stepped into the sitting room for privacy to text Landon.

Can you meet me at the gelato shop in twenty minutes? My sister wants me to take her out for gelato.

Landon: I’m leaving now.

“Okay, hurry and get your brother and meet me in the limo.” Adaline ran to find William.

“What about Landon. Are you going to see him?” Georgina whispered.

“He’s going to meet us there.”

After a short wait in the car for William and Adaline, we drove to the store. Georgina rolled the window down between us and the driver.

“Raul, when we arrive, try to accommodate the patrons. Catherine doesn’t need anyone else angry at her.”

We waited in the limo for security to check the store. Raul was always nervous with unplanned outings such as this, taking extra time to clear the area for our safety after this morning’s incident. With the shop now free of customers, Alban knocked on the window. Georgina exited the car first. Adaline ran past her to the counter and order first. People stared at us and snapped pictures outside the store as we made our selection. Alban and Raul encouraged onlookers to move past the windows and stopped people from entering the shop while we were there.

“Three, double scoop cones please.” I raised three fingers.

“Oh, I only want one scoop,” Georgina insisted. “Aren’t you having some, Catherine?”

“No, sweets are too much for me today.”

We sat in a booth eating our cold, soothing treat while I watched for Landon to arrive.
